A God-Ordained Revelation

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
— Genesis 2:24

At this point, creation is completed, love songs have been sung, and a transition into the next part of the history of humanity is about to take place. Before that transition, considering the importance of the institution of marriage for the revelation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, it is most appropriate that a declaration is made on this matter. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Union is not only sitting on the same couch together for the rest of one’s life nor is it only the intimacy of the marriage bed. One flesh is not a Frankenstein-creation of our own making nor is it made by any nation, state, or institution. Rather, and again, the one flesh of a marriage relationship is a God-ordained revelation of Jesus Christ and the Church. To assume anything less than this of marriage is to do disservice to the institution, hinder those in such a relationship, and crack the solemn foundation upon which the thing is laid.

And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
— Matthew 19:3-6
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
— Ephesians 5:31, 32
Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,
“Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God
the Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and exult
and give him the glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his Bride has made herself ready;
it was granted her to clothe herself
with fine linen, bright and pure”—
for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
— Revelation 19:6-8
